Alcoholism Is A Progressive Disease.

There are many symptoms related to drinking problems. Alcoholism is considered a progressive disease, meaning that the symptoms and effects of drinking alcohol become increasingly more severe over time. Those who use alcohol may begin to show early signs of a problem, then progress to showing symptoms of alcohol abuse; if drinking continues, they may later show symptoms of alcoholism or alcohol dependence.

Because of this, nine out of ten primary care physicians in the United States fail to correctly diagnose alcohol abuse even when their adult patients present classic early symptoms, according to a survey by the Center on Addiction and Drug Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University. The doctors responding to the survey cited lack of adequate training in medical school, residency or continuing medical education courses; skepticism about treatment effectiveness; discomfort discussing substance abuse, time constraints and patient resistance.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, IV, defines alcohol abuse as drinking despite alcohol-related physical, social, psychological, or occupational problems, or drinking in dangerous situations, such as while driving. The World Health Organizations International Classification of Diseases refers to “harmful use” of alcohol, or drinking that causes either physical or mental damage in the absence of alcohol dependence. In other words, alcohol abuse is any harmful use of alcohol.

For someone who is alcoholic or alcohol dependent, the symptoms include all of those associated with alcohol abuse (above). But alcoholics also continue to drink in spite of all the problems it has caused in their lives.When alcohol abuse reaches the alcohol dependence stage, the person also experiences at least three of seven other symptoms, including neglect of other activities, excessive use of alcohol, impaired control of alcohol consumption, persistence of alcohol use, large amounts of time spent in alcohol-related activities, withdrawal symptoms and tolerance of alcohol.

The scenario has been played over and over many times. After a particularly damaging or embarrassing binge, the hungover person will make an oath to himself and others to drink “never again” and quite often is sincere about quitting. But with the onset of withdrawal symptoms, also comes the “craving” for more alcohol. The body is telling the drinker that it “needs” alcohol. As the physical symptoms of withdrawal begin to increase, taking another drink simply becomes less painful than not taking one — or so it seems at the time.

For those who have committed themselves to not drinking again, or forced by circumstances to not have access to alcohol, the struggle to fight the withdrawal symptoms can become a dangerous battle, one that can actually become life threatening. For some, who are less chemically dependent, withdrawal symptoms might be as “mild” as merely getting the shakes, or the sweats — or perhaps nausea, headache, anxiety, a rapid heart beat, and increased blood pressure. Although these symptoms are uncomfortable and irritating, they are not necessarily dangerous. But they are often accompanied by the “craving” for more alcohol, making the decision to continue abstinence much more difficult to make.

Some of the psychological symptoms are: feelings of jumpiness or nervousness; feelings of shakiness; anxiety; irritability or easily excited; emotional volatility, rapid emotional changes; depression; fatigue; difficulty with thinking clearly; having bad dreams. Some of the physical symptoms are: headache – general, pulsating; sweating, especially the palms of the hands or the face; nusea; vomiting; loss of appetite; insomnia, sleeping difficulty; paleness; rapid heart rate (palpitations); eyes, pupils different size (enlarged, dilated pupils); clammy skin; abnormal movements; tremor of the hands; involuntary, abnormal movements of the eyelids.

The Importance Of Prenatal Care And What To Expect

You as the mother will benefit from prenatal care.

Women who receive appropriate prenatal care generally have healthier babies and are less likely to deliver prematurely. The chance of having serious problems related to pregnancy is also decreased with appropriate prenatal care.

What should you expect during prenatal visits?

• You should expect to learn about pregnancy

• Your health care provider should monitor medical conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes

• Your health care provider should administer tests for problems with the baby

• You should receive tests for health problems such as gestational diabetes

• Your health care provider may refer you to other services such as pregnancy/childbirth support groups, the WIC program or childbirth education classes

As soon as you suspect you are pregnant you should call a health care provider to set up appointments to confirm your pregnancy and/or to find out when you should come in for your prenatal care appointments. Be sure to keep all health care appointments during your pregnancy even if you are feeling fine. Make getting prenatal care a priority.

The best time to see your health care provider is actually before you become pregnant to give your health care provider a chance to get to know you and the present status of your health. These visits can address concerns and/or issues before you become pregnant.

A typical prenatal care schedule for a low-risk pregnancy that is normally progressing includes:

• Weeks 4 to 28: 1 visit per month (every 4 weeks)
• Weeks 28 to 36: 2 visits per month (every 2 to 3 weeks)
• Weeks 36 to birth: 1 visit per week

If you are a woman with a chronic medical condition or a “high-risk” pregnancy you may have to see your health care provider more often.

During your first prenatal care visit, your health care provider will most likely ask you a lot of questions. Have available the answers to the following questions for your first visit:

• Status of your health, your partner’s health and the health of your close family members (do not be concerned if you do not know all these answers)

• Do you have any medical problems?

• What kind of medications are you taking?

In addition, your health care provider will:

• Do a physical exam and a pelvic (internal) exam
• Weigh you
• Check your blood pressure
• Check a urine sample for infection
• Do some blood tests to check for anemia and see if you have had certain kinds of infections
• You will be asked if you want a test for HIV
• Do a pap smear to check for cervical cancer and other tests for vaginal infections
• Figure out your due date; most babies are born within two weeks before or after a due date
• Prescribe prenatal vitamins with folic acid

Your first prenatal visit will be the longest. During later prenatal visits you can expect your provider to:

• Weigh you
• Check your blood pressure
• Measure your belly
• Check your hands, feet and face for swelling
• Listen for the baby’s heartbeat (after the 12th week of pregnancy)
• Do any tests that are needed such as blood tests or ultrasound
• Ask you if you have any questions or concerns. If you have questions, it is a good idea to write them down in a list format so you do not forget at the time of the visit

Everything you tell your health care provider will be held in confidence. This means your health care provider cannot tell anyone else what you say without your permission. Do not be afraid or embarrassed to talk about issues that might be embarrassing. You need to tell your health care provider if you smoke, drink alcohol or take any drugs. It is safe to tell your health care provider if your partner hurts you or if you are afraid of your partner.

Researchers do not know exactly why women who get early and regular prenatal care have healthier pregnancies and healthier babies. Experts agree it does work. Make prenatal care a priority during your pregnancy for the sake of yourself and your baby.

A dental check-up early in pregnancy is also a good idea to help your mouth remain healthy. Your dentist may even recommend more checks during pregnancy.

Substitute milk, juice, or tea for coffee during breakfast, since caffeine is a powerful drug that can affect both the bodys chemistry as well as ones mood. By eating a well-balanced diet and avoiding junk food, this could better regulate ones sugar and salt intake that could help in quitting smoking.

Exercise can also be a good diversion from smoking, besides being great for the body and ones general well-being. Small, short bursts of exercise can help overcome those sudden rush of cravings that come out of nowhere. By doing exercise such as jumping jacks, crunches, short jogs, push-ups, a walk around the block, and bike riding — one can gradually improve his or her health and outlook in life.

At the end of the smoke-free day, be sure to reward yourself. By having a nice meal, buying new clothes, seeing a movie or concert, or buying the latest music CD — you can replace your cravings for cigarettes with more positive and healthy rewards.

Types of Happiness

There are different types of happiness that different people are experiencing. While there may not be an exact term for them I will call them kind of happy, pretty happy, and really happy people.
Kind of happy – These people are not completely miserable. They do complain about stuff and find that there are lots of trials and tribulations that they go through but they can see the positive side of things sometimes and they normally say things like “Well, at least this didn’t happen to me”.
They seek out and hang on to pleasures when they want to be happy like movies, games, and even drugs such as alcohol or cigarettes. These things make them happy and while engaging in these things they are at their happiest. They go through life in a routine type of way and are satisfied with what they do.
Many people find themselves kind of happy throughout their whole lives and are content with that type of emotion.
Pretty Happy – These people are engaged in life and their surroundings. These are the people that know what matters to them in life and have a sense of awareness and appreciation that other people do not.
They know where they are in life and where they are going and are staying on a positive vibration to get there. They say things like “How can I make this better?” in regards to their lives and relationships and they strive and usually succeed in making those results come true.
Really Happy – These people are living an extremely meaningful life. They know who they are, how they got there, and what they can offer for others and this world. And they do offer themselves to other people without question. They not only want their lives to be happy but they truly want others to succeed and be happy as well. They feel good about themselves and what they have accomplished at the end of the day and they look forward to what tomorrow will bring.
There are many people who do not fit into these categories and are living a life of not being happy at all. They do not see the bright side of their own life so they can’t make anyone else happy. They tend to engage in complaining and miserable banter and they make other people’s lives worse instead of better.
The goal that people should have in mind is to work your way up the ladder to become really happy but many people end up staying in kind of happy or pretty happy and find that they eventually just believe that this is it for them or that this is as good as it gets, and they stop trying to achieve complete happiness.
But once you start to realize that there is a better way of living and get a small taste of that then you will realize that complete happiness is a constant journey and something to strive for always – as life should be full of happiness and joy.
At the end of your life wouldn’t it be nice to go to bed knowing that you gave other people and this world all the happiness and joy you possibly could?
